The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, founded in 1851, became Cleveland’s first public health nurses and established their first hospitals in Ohio City and downtown Cleveland. Throughout the years the Sisters of Charity have been faithful to their mission, "to promote stronger collaboration and to encourage the development of new programs and services in response to unmet health and human service needs.”
From 1985-1987, the Conference of Religious Leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland conducted a study of the health care needs of their members and the resources available to meet those needs. The recommendation was that 87% of the congregations should consider cooperative care arrangements to avoid duplication of services and provide quality care in a cost-effective manner. Further, the study showed that 18 congregations did not have the facilities or resources to provide nursing care for their elderly.
Realizing that their Motherhouse, located in Richfield, Ohio, was being under-utilized, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine engaged a number of experts to determine the feasibility of converting their home into a state-of-the art nursing facility dedicated to serving the aging religious as well as others seeking a God-centered community environment. After the studies confirmed the need and financial feasibility, the Sisters enthusiastically began the renovation of the Motherhouse to create Regina Health Center.
Regina Health Center opened its doors in July, 1993. It was the first collaborative health care facility of its kind in the United States. Twenty-two religious congregations of women and men committed to sending their members to Regina Health Center, as well as the priests of the Dioceses of Cleveland and Youngstown. In 2001 Regina Health Center added 20 additional skilled nursing beds in response to the needs at that time.
Regina Health Center also extends its ministry and welcomes laymen and laywomen who wish to live in a God-centered, community environment. Today, Regina Health Center is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System which is also sponsored by the religious congregation.
TESTIMONIAL |
To Administration, Staff and Residents of RHC: I wish to extend my gratitude and appreciation, and that of my family, for the loving care and concern all of you extended to my wife, Alberta, especially during the past few weeks, but also during her entire stay at RHC. Your compassion and excellent care of Alberta along with the kindness extended to me and my family during this most difficult time will always be cherished. It is truly a blessing to have an institution like Regina Health Center to assist families as their loved ones journey to eternal rest. God bless all of you abundantly as you continue your ministry to your residents. I will return whenever I can to visit. Mr. Albert K., Ohio.
